t's the heart of winter around here, and things are slooowww. For instance, The Black Door, normally an every weekend venue in the city of the golden dome, has no music this weekend. Many decry the decline of our usually vibrant scene in the winter, but let's face it, there's just not that many people coming out.


Paris Piano Trio pianist returns – solo
ean-Claude Pennetier is well-known to central Vermont audiences as the pianist of the beloved Paris Piano Trio. But, in Europe, the French pianist is perhaps better known for his solo career.


Dar Williams wants it real
ith an attractive alto voice, an on-stage presence that is warm and humorous, and songs that reveal a true wordsmith, Dar Williams is a welcome visitor to the Barre Opera House Celebration Series. On Saturday, Feb. 13, art 8 p.m., this Beacon, N.Y.-resident and her pianist/accompanist will make their first visit here.


EILEN JEWELL AND LAURA VEIRS Rising songstresses bring unique sounds to Vermont

Boston-based Eilen Jewell brings her rugged Americana on Thursday, while Oregon-based Laura Veirs brings a dreamier, more delicate sound the following night.

Sarah Durham has been playing piano since she was a young child, but it was just another extra-curricular activity for the Spaulding High School junior. But, since she won this season's Vermont Philharmonic Borowicz Memorial Student Scholarship competition, that is changing.

Northern Roots festival enlivens winter music season

With legendary Marlboro Music Festival nearby, it's been at the forefront of the creative economy by creating the New England Youth Theater, restoring the Latchis Theatre, and sponsoring a monthly gallery walk.


BOW THAYER Central Vermont tunesmith hits his stride
central Vermont resident for a dozen years now – smack dab in the middle of the state in the Windsor County village of Gaysville (part of Stockbridge) – Bow Thayer, the Massachusetts-born banjo and guitar player, 43, has quietly emerged to become one of the state's best songwriters, and one who seems to get better with every release.


A Far Cry
BARRE – The highly-acclaimed Boston chamber orchestra, "A Far Cry," travels to the Barre Opera House on Monday, Feb. 1, at 7:30 p.m., to present "The Lover." The program will be filled with romance — Ginastera's Concerto per corde, Tchaikovsky's "Souvenir de Florence," and Wolf's "Italian" Serenade will all be featured.

COLCHESTER – The Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival will reprise hits from last summer with Artistic Director Soovin Kim, and festival artists Jeewon Park and Edward Arron, on Wednesday, Feb. 3, at 7:30 p.m., at Saint Michael's College's Elley-Long Music Center.

MONTPELIER – The Vermont Contemporary Music Ensemble's February program includes two new works by two of Vermont's finest composers, Thomas Read and David Feurzeig. Also included are a piece by the young Nicolas Chlebak (winner of the 2009 Vermont All State composer competition) and a work by VSO composer-in-residence, David Ludwig.
