ART RESOURCE ASSOCIATION LOCAL ARTISTS STRUT their STUFF
For more than a decade, the Art Resource Association has been showcasing the work of its membership – a diverse bunch of central Vermont visual artists – often at Montpelier's T.W. Wood Gallery & Arts Center.

Musical happenings in and around the Capital City
ow, I hardly know where to begin this week. There are so many great offerings around the area this weekend, it's hard to know where to start. Rest assured if you're looking for quality live performance, there's something for everyone, so, here we go!

Bebel Gilberto heats up L'Astral

Virtuoso piano
MONTPELIER – Pianist Ian Altman, a virtuoso in the "grand manner," will perform music of Scarlatti, Chopin and Prokofiev, tonight at 7:30 p.m., at Bethany Church, 115 Main St. in Montpelier. Altman has performed throughout the United States and Canada.

Jazz Mass tonight
WATERBURY – Imagine an unlikely marriage of a dignified and seemingly somber Latin Mass with somebody like tenor jazz saxophonist Coleman Hawkins playing free-wheeling riffs at the breaks. It sounds impossible but perhaps plausible only in the minds of fans who have attended the last several concerts of the Mad River Chorale.

No Strings Marionettes
RANDOLPH – Chandler invites families and children of all ages to usher in the holiday season and enter the wonders of traditional puppet theater with the No Strings Marionette Company's "Wasabi: A Dragon's Tale," at Chandler Music Hall on Saturday, Nov. 28, at 11 a.m.

Dartmouth Symphony
HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra teams up with Hanover native Bonnie Thron, now principal cellist of the North Carolina Symphony, for an evening of music by Tchaikovsky, Shosta-kovich and Beethoven. The concert takes place on Saturday, Nov. 21, at 8 p.m., in Spaulding Auditorium.

Sing-along 'Sound of Music'
WOODSTOCK – The worldwide phenomenon "Sing-a-Long Sound of Music" comes to Town Hall Theatre on Saturday, Nov. 28, at 7 p.m. Having started in the UK back in 1999, the show has now become a worldwide hit, playing to packed houses across the globe with more than 10,000 performances in nine different countries.

EDWARD SHARPE AND MAGNETIC ZEROS 'High-energy love fest'
ne of the most lauded indie bands around visits Vermont on Sunday, when the Los Angeles folk-rock collective Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros brings its celebratory, dance-inducing live show to Club Metronome in Burlington.

Three Frenchmen win again in Capital Concert
MONTPELIER – There's no way you could convince Saturday's audience at the packed-to-the-gills Unitarian Church that there is anything boring about chamber music. Three times they erupted in spontaneous standing ovations.

Musical happenings in and around the Capital City
here's no shortage of options this week of great live music. In fact, there's a straight up overabundance, so I'll give my regrets in advance if I cannot include everything, or if my editors need to do the same. Sometimes, there's just too much going on in our little neck of the woods to fit it all in – lucky us! Here's what's up.

CD REVIEW Bow Thayer: At his intimate best
ochester-based Bow Thayer has released one of the best CDs I've heard this year. "Shooting Arrows at the Moon" is all acoustic, low-key, informal and laced with excellent songs and fine picking. With Thayer writing all 14 tracks, singing and playing guitar, banjo and uke, we have his best work to date.

Montreal's 'Magic Flute' fun — and beautiful
ONTREAL — It's nearly impossible to believe that Mozart wrote his most fun opera, albeit with characteristic depth, while he was dying.

Freewheeling folk-rock Devendra Banhart marches to his own beat
n unwilling poster boy for the so-called "freak-folk" movement, idiosyncratic Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Devendra Banhart visits Higher Ground Thursday on the heels of his major label debut album, "What Will We Be."

Sharing space: Idea touts collective workplace for tech, creative talent
There’s a new concept in town that has been sweeping the country — and the world. It is called co-working, and has come to Burlington in the form of Office Squared at 106 Main Street.

A five-year-old program to help improve the health of chronic-care sufferers, particularly those with diabetes, in Windsor and Windham counties is proving to be successful.

Vermont’s Green Hotels program ramps up
Concerns about sound environmental practices in the Green Mountain State make it no wonder that many motels and hotels here are going green to attract potential clients.

Serving up ambiance: Restaurants set sights on holiday season
The final few weeks of the year is a time when more people are likely to make a special occasion of dining out with family and friends. Upper Valley restaurateurs are hoping this year’s traditional holiday period won’t be an exception, despite the slow economy.

Home design: what’s hot, what’s not
Given the economy and New England’s Yankee conservatism, the latest home decorating trends here in the Upper Valley seem to reflect a sense of tradition, a tendency to recycle and “repurpose” items and a movement toward green and eco-friendly materials.
